An awful lot more work happens than you need to, to just send an email. e.g. it might open extra imap sessions you don't need, setup vfolders, etc. A sending mail app just needs to send the mail and apply outgoing filters/copy to sent, not everything else. Particularly since you might not want to have to close it down afterwards either.
Of course, if the sender stores his mail in IMAP, and the default Sent folder is on said IMAP server, those IMAP sessions you describe would have to be opened anyway...
