Well, ideally it would be nice if it didn't have to.

An awful lot more work happens than you need to, to just send an email.  e.g. it might open extra imap sessions you don't need, setup vfolders, etc.

A sending mail app just needs to send the mail and apply outgoing filters/copy to sent, not everything else.  Particularly since you might not want to have to close it down afterwards either.

(i dont see it as that important, but it might be nicer).
