It can stand out as a beacon of excellence by always emitting standards-
conformant messages. This is what happens with PGP attachments for
example (there are solid reasons for not *accepting* non-conformant PGP,
beyond simply a strict adherence to RFCs, tho that's also slightly
controversial).
In this particular case, could something be done that highlights the
bad
encoding, but makes a stab at it anyway - something like put '?'
either
end of the string or render it in a different colour?
That would work for me.
