I am having the same difficulty with the exact same symptoms. I
purchased a serial cable and the synchronization works fine. I would
love to figure out why the USB won't work.
Incidentally, I am running RedHat 9 with Evo 1.3.92 and gnome-pilot
2.0.9 from the Evolution Beta Channel.

Based on the output below, I'm skeptical that the device you have is
actually the "first" handspring pda; it's presumably much more recent
than that.
I know there's better Clie support in the current gnome-pilot (2.0.9).
If you have an earlier gnome-pilot, an upgrade might help.
Also, given that the problem seems to be in gnome-pilot rather than the
Evolution conduits specifically, you might be better off posting to the
gnome-pilot list (though I know there's at least one gnome-pilot
developer on this list).

Dear Evolution-users,
has anybody already syncronized with a Handspring Visor Deluxe (the
first handspring pda)? I have not installed gnome but only KDE. It does
not work:
(Or have I messed something? Should I only press the hotsync button and
evolution will sync automatically?)
I cannot syncronize, and if I go into Pilot Settings, the gnome control
center appears. Here, I had added the device using /dev/ttyUSB1. At the
"pilot" I clicked on "vom Pilot empfangen" (Receive from Pilot). I get
the error message "the request to get pilot id failed" - anyway if I
press the hot sync button on the visor before or after click on the
button.
Here, what it writes into /var/log/messages:
(It seems that the device is prober recognized, isn't it?)
