Thanks so much. You were both right. This is a WM issue. In my case
Sawfish was setup as using CTRL for Modifiers keys used to default
window manager shortcuts (control center -> Sawfish -> shortcuts). I
changed it to alt and now I can make non adjacent multiple selection.

This is almost certainly a window manager issue. I had the same
problem when running sawfish - but solved it by removing one of the
sawfish shortcuts that bound control-double-click (or something
similar).
