Indeed, deskbar-applet is looking forward to this, since currently we
have to watch and re-parse the XML on disk every time that the bookmarks
or history file changes.

Well, deskbar knows how to read multiple bookmark stores (eg epiphany,
firefox, galeon), but out of the box, we've gone with indexing and
presenting only the one from the preferred browser. Of course, deskbar
is designed to be extensible, so that a multiple-browser-toting power
user could write a deskbar plug-in (see
http://live.gnome.org/DeskbarApplet_2fExtending ) that dispatches
different URLs to different browsers, or forms the union of all
browser's bookmarks.
An alternative is to explicitly synchronize various browsers' bookmarks,
for which you may want to look at the links on
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2004-November/msg00410.html
Nigel.
