gedit has automatic indentation under Preferences -> Editor -> Tab
Stops.
Unfortunately you will wind up with indentation on your blank lines, so
it's incompatible with projects that prohibit trailing whitespace. :(
Yikes. OK, my honest suggestion here is to take a look at how Geany is
doing it. No doubt we need to monitor the buffer and manipulate it.
Could simply strip a line if it has nothing but whitespace.
