I don't think anyone is saying that we DON'T need them. I'm sure most
people agree that we do need good search integrated into the desktop.
As others have stated, I don't think either beagle or tracker is at
that point yet. Out of all the things GNOME may claim to need on the
desktop, the first and foremost thing it needs, is users. Without that,
it doesn't matter what software we have. Having either beagle or tracker
is not going to get us a significant increase in user base.

One shining point in usability testing, when we were working on where to
put the Search entry, was that users actively avoid doing search, and
resort to other methods to find files, such as simply browsing. This is
not because beagle, tracker, or anything else are especially horrible
today, but rather because past experiences with other search methods
(primarily the standard find files in windows), has resulted in very
poor results.
