A couple points:

1. I believe that users do care about Banshee supporting appropriate metadata standards. How else would Banshee get the information in this case?  What is the "sane" thing to do?  Automatically assume that all albums with the same name are actually a compilation?  That would lead to many, many more problems.  Somehow Banshee needs to be told whether or not an Album is a compilation, either manually or by automatically fetching metadata from the Internet (which would be awesome, but it's no small task).  If you can think of other options, see point #2.

If the album artist field is not filled in there's no way Banshee can
magically sort it correctly for you. Unlike Windows Media Player,
Banshee, as far as I know, does not automatically fetch meta data from
an online source but rather expects you to fill in the information
correctly. Rather than duplicating the works of an existing
application the Banshee documentation points to using Picard to tag
music files with the correct data.

There are several bugs about this. I personally experience the same
thing as I have a lot of compilation albums. The main bug about this
issue seems to be https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540873
but it's still a work in progress.
