If the album artist field is not filled in there's no way Banshee can
magically sort it correctly for you. Unlike Windows Media Player,
Banshee, as far as I know, does not automatically fetch meta data from
an online source but rather expects you to fill in the information
correctly. Rather than duplicating the works of an existing
application the Banshee documentation points to using Picard to tag
music files with the correct data.

There are several bugs about this. I personally experience the same
thing as I have a lot of compilation albums. The main bug about this
issue seems to be https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540873
but it's still a work in progress.
