Having said that, can the delete key not be mapped like the other

Wait, Craig; are you saying that it *is* possible if I edit gconf?
Currently no. I was wondering if it might be possible to work around
that. But, a little testing has shown that the delete key is bound by GTK
such that it can remove any existing accelerator from a menu item. A very
useful feature if you have set /desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels
to true and accidentally set an item.
At this point, I don't care at all what happens by default when I press
the Delete key; I just want to be able to map the Delete key to "Move to
trash"--frankly, I don't mind if I have to go a roundabout way to do it
either.
At the moment, I think you're stuck with patching the source code or
getting used to using 'D'. However, Peter has suggested another option
which I'll respond to separately.
