I think, we can have the simplest features first to have a workig app
sooner then just add features as the project grows.
I want to push for the observe function because I like how it works in
Morae. The idea is, many people involved in the project development
are watching while the testing session is going on. I'm thinking of
using something like vnc.
As you said, though, having the basics would suffice. I think, it's
best to decide on what features we are going to prioritize so we can
have a working app sooner than trying to put on the first version
every feature we can think of

That would be cool. You're right, tabs are conventionally used for
information that doesn't need a pattern. A wizard could work. Other
than
one,
What gtk+element can you suggest? I'm thinking of hierarchical
buttons like
the one on Ubuntu Software Center and Nautilus (

Maybe, we can add a wizard plus those hierarchical buttons. What
do you think?
I think before that, the exact uses of this program needs to be
defined.
For instance, do you need to take notes during the recording? Do you
need to annotate the recording with the beginning and end of each
task, errors and other significant events? If you don't need this then
I suggest that having both the observe and view stages are unnessary.
I would suggest this anyway since both would require a playback
mechanism, and there's no reason to not be able to go back annotate
further once the recording has finished.
What kind of statistics are being gathered, and are these vital, or
just a nice thing to also have? If there just a thing that you can
look at if you want to (assuming that the actual recorded video is the
main focus) then it doesn't really need to be forced upon the tester
at the end of some wizard, it could be a "View > Summary" kind of
thing. Maybe not, I can't really think of how this would be used in
real life.
So now there's really two stages: Setup and Record/Annotate. The
logical way to go from one to the other is by clicking the record
button. I was thinking along the lines of
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/136/lab2.png
where upon clicking record, the bottom configuration stuff would be
replaced by a seek bar and some other annotation stuff, chapters,
points of interest etc.
With
File > New Session
File > New Predefined Session > Desktop Application
File > New Predefined Session > Mobile Device
File > Open Sesson
File > Export Recording As Movie...
File > Export Summary As PDF
etc.
Is it still too basic?
