And I think I agree that writing meta-data should probably if ever be
an opt-in function.
I believe a XMP sidecar file is standard practice in this use case.
The sidecar file is in the same directory as the image file and has
the same name but with a .xmp extension. This is used not just for raw
images but anytime it may be undesireable to write data directly to an
image file.
