As far as I recall, when I last used a commercial project planner it
would only allow double booking of resources if specifically allowed.
The default was to string them in time from end to end in order that
they were found.
The other really useful thing that I found was that if you had not
marked a task as complete and it was due to complete yesterday, it would
move it forwards and automatically adjust project slippage. You could
therefore have a realistic view of where the project was to time-lines
without having to readjust for every little date.
