Also, after switching to a console session and playing audio (ESpeak in
this case), then returning to the X desktop session, I had to kill the
Speech-Dispatcher process to regain speech from Orca.

Copying the directory again (with the configuration that set the
output device properly) worked this time after a reboot.
At least it's possible, even if it doesn't perform as desired by
default yet.
