The desktop file itself won't change your default browser. If you're 
running the MATE desktop, you can change your default browser using 
system -> preferences -> personal -> preferred applications, under the 
internet tab. Chromium itself may also be able to handle that for you. 
Upon opening the browser from your menu, press F6, and you should land 
on an alert that will ask you if you want to set Chromium as your 
default browser. One of these methods is sure to work. Hope it helps.
