I wonder would this work under gnome?  I am not using ubuntu, but I do
have .desktop files in /usr/share/applications the chromium one looks
a bit different.

This is the .desktop file that works here. Save the attachment as
~/.local/share/applications/chromium.desktop and you should be up and
running. It should allow you to run Chromium from the menu and also use
it as your default browser. Hope it helps.
