Re: [orca-list] Accessible Rolling Release Distro

Forgot to add ...

There used to be problems with Orca in the context of Ubuntu. But now there are no problems because Ubuntu uses unmodified versions of Orca.

Hi Didier.

I completely agree with you. Therefore, for users who would like to try Linux, I always recommend Ubuntu-MATE. I usually recommend OEM_Pack-MATE from the Ukrainian company UALinux to users from Ukraine. There is currently a problem with the installer, but this problem does not apply to those who use EFI.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1874283

I hope that this bug for Ubuntu 20.10 will be fixed (or even already fixed). I have a positive experience working with both members of the Ubuntu-MATE community and Ubuntu developers, so I know for sure that they are fixing bugs. Updates to Ubuntu usually do not spoil anything. But you need to update the distribution to the latest version some time after the release. By the way: Fedora also usually updates without problems. But upgrading to beta can sometimes break something ... If the user wants to receive newer versions of the software, I recommend keeping a certain balance. For example, a user can add third-party repositories, build something for themselves from source, and so on. This is not difficult because there are many publications on the Internet about Ubuntu that can be useful to blind users.

Hello,

Then stay away from a a rolling release, as a beginner won't know what to do if a a package upgrade cause an unexpected behavior of the system (including not being able to boot, or loss of sound), which will happen sooner or later.

Hello,

I was looking for a rolling release to hopefully make the process of upgrading less painful, as it can be in Ubuntu and Fedora. This is for an individual I know, who lacks the skills to get out of jams where the system won't boot, there may be errors about the kernel, etc. It seems that Debian may be the answer, with the text installer.

Thank you everyone for your feedback on this topic. Any additional feedback is appreciated.

     Hello,

To be able to help you better please answer these two questions:

     1) What do you really  mean by "rolling release"?
     2) Why do you want a rolling release?

     Cheers,

     Didier
