Re: [orca-list] The most accessible linix version to use with Orca?

You can customize the punctuation level in orca for each program. To do this, press your orca hotkey (probably insert) plus control plus space. Tab over to the speech tab, then down to punctuation level. One of the first things I  do after setting up a new machine is to create a custom config for gedit. I turn on all punctuation and white space. That way when I am coding, I can hear tabs, semicolons, etc.

I do not recall having to turn down the default punctuation level when setting up a new machine. Could be I just do that without thinking. But you can change the punctuation level to none if you'd like.

If I can get a verified ubuntu iso talking over here to the extent orca

espeakup package. Then I'm going to tame the graphical user interface
so it only comes up when summoned. A friend of mine finds the ubuntu
orca speech rate way too slow and has little use for all of the
punctuation. This way he'll at least be able to read his email without
going any further into baldness.
If I can get all of that working I'll talk my friend through how to get
that set up on his system.
Is it supposed to be alt-super-s to bring up orca on 19.10 desktop? I
didn't try gnome-orca before tossing the last dvd so will be burning
another shortly and I'll start the machine up and leave it alone before
hitting any keys and maybe orca will come up talking. This is an x86_64
machine with a little over 15gb of available memory too.

It sounds to me as if Ubuntu has some bugs and has made some unfortunate
choices. But I would be hesitant to just scratch it off the list. It has a
history of being pretty good. We have nothing but Ubuntu in my department.
I've had next to no trouble with it. I am responsible for about 100 desktops
and about 10 servers. I think I'd prefer Debian but I haven't had much trouble
with Ubuntu.

I would normally boot into the Ubuntu installer image all the time. But I just
happened to have set up a PXE install for Ubuntu 19.10. So I have never tried
booting from the ISO.? I know 19.04 worked fine though. If the screen reader
didn't work in 19.10, Ubuntu would probably considder that a bug. Good chance
it will work again in 20.04.

That cured me of Ubuntu I'm pretty sure permanently.
While I understand the sentiment, I'd prefer to have the Ubuntu folks work
on the problem(s). So, I posted a bug report on launchpad:

    gsettings dependency is problematic
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/orca/+bug/1867971

I mostly clipped text from this thread; if anyone can add useful comments or
details to the report, please do so.
