From my own personal experience, mate-terminal and other similar
applications are good to have, and I like to keep one open for my own
use. However, text only mode is rarely if ever needed except as a
fallback, and you probably don't even have text consoles pre-allocated
on most distros now. They just open up if you press alt+control+f2 or
one of the other function key combinations, even alt+control+f12, and
your desktop is most likely on alt+control+f1, since it's the first
allocation that is needed on most systems. That said, starting in text
mode is sometimes a personal preference, and Fenrir is good to have
running in any case, whether you choose to start in text mode or you
just need a fallback in case your desktop and/or Orca stops working.
