I haven't tried the Mate version yet, but I'll give it a shot. (At
least, I'm pretty sure there's a Mate version of the DVD.) I haven't
used Mate at all, so I should check it out anyway.

the sound settings to set it for both speakers and headphones. I also

Maybe you're right. Are you able to launch Mate and Orca from a Debian
live DVD ?
