hi
Looks like I'm wrong about snap packages. They *can* be made accessible.
It's just the spotify and skype apps that are not accessible. The ubuntu
mate welcome package is a snap file, as is the software boutique, and
both are accessible. I don't know whether it's worth bothering trying
to get ms and spotify to fix their obvious bugs, they'll probably just
say to use windows, but I suppose someone will eventually bring it up,
gotta use proprietary stuff and all that.
Thanks

I couldn't agree more re joanie. I ask her to do stuff when she has
time, others ask her to do stuff when she has time, her company pays
her to work on stuff, she's the only one making sure orca keeps
getting better, with the exception of translators, she's the main
coder, so she does a lot, and I do mean a lot, of work. I don't think
I could do all the work she does without burning out several times
over. In addition to that, she's very kind and diplomatic. My message
sounded like a two year old who was frustrated someone took his ball,
and she just shrugged and said send me a debug file, when she could've
said ubuntu bug, bug them, or said nothing, and I'd have been screwed.
As for snap packages, you can do snap install packagename, without
sudo, it will open a gtk dialog for your password. You can also do
snap search packagename, snap info packagename, snap remove
packagename, and a bunch of stuff I don't mess with. Gnome software
can also install packages from the "snap store", so that's an option.
Looking at snapcraft, the main hq for snap, snapd and the associated
packages that make it work run on ubuntu, mint, arch, debian, gentoo,
and others. The one bad thing about snap is that a lot of the packages
are proprietary, although that's not snap's fault. There are open
source things too, like mumble, telegram, and firefox, but there are
also closed source stuff, like skype, spotify and slack. I am glad
that linux has an app store like thing, that works across linux
distros. I wish more of it was open, but shrug. All of the
underpinnings are open, and that's good enough for me. Gnome software,
snap, snapd, and all of the things snap needs to run are all open,
it's just some of the apps in the store that aren't.
Thanks

Hi Kendell,
which so far doesn't seem to be done. Snap packages get access to
the resources they need except accessibility services, I think. I'm
not absolutely positive about this, but I download a snap version of
firefox,
How do you have install it? I'm not familiar with snap.
and it was a blank window called "firefox", so orca doesn't
seem to be able to see it, and firefox is very much accessible. I
wonder if the ubuntu guys would fix this,
It's indeed ubuntu-related issue.
or if joanie could work on it when
she has time?
I don't want to talk for Joanie but it seems she has already enough
work to do with Orca bugs and improvement.
Best regards,
Alex.
