Try without using shift+a first. The other thing you can do is to arrow 
through the file and then press the space bar to hear where you are 
before you select anything. Then press your opening square bracket to 
select the beginning, play the file using the space bar from where you 
are and then press the closing square bracket at the end of your selection.
