Ftp isn't really secure, since passwords are transmitted in plain text.
Your best bet is to have a server that allows you to access it via ssh.
Then you can use sshfs to copy files to and from the server, and you
could restrict access to only those people with the ssh key. You may
also be able to use MATE's connect to server option under the places
menu to connect to your server. This option actually has several methods
for connecting, including ssh and ftp. So even if you are connecting to
a shared hosting environment that only allows ftp upload and download,
"Places -> Connect to server..." should allow you to send and receive
your files.
