Re: [orca-list] I definitely need some major major help with Gnome Tweak Tool

Hello,

As I said I am using tab and shift+tab when possible. In cases I have remembered such as folder pane of nautilus, language and regional settings in the Settings also known as Gnome control center, Gnome contacts and a few other places I'm using ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab.
In other cases I am only using ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab when pressing tab or shift+tab is not usefull.

Greetings

Peter

So, in a list like you describe, do I have to hit ctrl+tab to get out of it, or would tabbing eventually cycle me out of it?

IN other words, is it just that ctrl+tabbing is quicker, as then I jump over all the unneeded stuff in the list, or is it something where it is absolutely necessary to move focus out of the list.

I do plan to look at that wiki. I'm not trying to be lazy and not do so. It's just that things have been really hectic, and unfortunately, come tonight, I have a babysitting job, so it'll be even more so hectic. I will get to it though, I promise. I did save the link, and do plan with all intentions to look at it.

Hello,

Unfortunatelly there might be minor differences caused by the different gnome versions. If you are running ubuntu 17.10 you are perhaps running Gnome 3.24. If you are using Ubuntu 17.04 most likelly you are running Gnome 3.22 and I am running Gnome 3.26 on Arch linux right now.

Tab / shift+tab vs ctrl+tab / ctrl+shift+tab is easy. If you move into a list sometimes pressing the tab key moves outside that list. This is when you are working with pre Gnome 3.10 apps. However more recent apps allow tab key navigation to the individual list items so in order to move past or before the list you need ctrl+tab / ctrl+shift+tab.

As for other new GTK+3 controls I am not sure if there are some general rules to follow. I have managed to grasp it some how so I can remember most of the cases. If I land on something I am not sure about I'll simply move around tryingtab and shift+tab first, then I'm continuing with up and down arrow keys and finally trying left and right arrow keys.
Just in case I might have forgotten something I think you should skim the Gnome keyboard shortcuts reference wiki page Andy has recommended us to look at tonight.
I think with 3rd party apps such oddities can be also be seen on other platforms including Windows. However here even apps native to a given platform e.g. Gnome 3 are not 100% consistent when providing keyboard navigation, it's why I think we need a bit of an extra work to master it.
Newertheless perhaps I'm crazy enough but I still like this very much.

Greetings

Peter

I think, Peter, what is confusing me is two things. Firstly, I'm not understanding the difference in tabbing and shift tabbing, vs. control! tabbing and control shift tabbing.

Secondly, I'm not making the connection between knowing when to control tab, vs. when to just simply tab. Also knowing when to right arrow, vs. when to down arrow to move through things. Is this more experimentation, or is there actually a little rule of thumb here which doesn't always work, but could! help me with determining.

BTW, thanks, I found that things didn't quite work as you said in the tweak app as far as how you said to arrow around, however your instructions were 99.999% accurate, and through them, I was able to figure it out.

Now, my only problem is I don't totally get why when I checked off external drives, is it showing my CD drive, even though there isn't a CD or DVD in it. I know we were working earlier this morning with that one DVD, I talked about on list, but I did eject that disk. I know I did, as it's right here on my desk in front of me. LOL!

Hello,

Okay so here is a step by step description on how to enable desktop icons in the Tweaks apps also known as Gnome tweak tool.
* Press the super key to expand the activities overview
* Type in tweak
* Wait a few seconds like two or three seconds just in case because gnome shell tends to flood orca with a lot of bogus events while using this part of the search
* If orca does not announce your first search result navigate using your arrow keys until you hear orca reporting Gnome tweak tool or Tweaks depending on your Gnome version.
* Press the enter key to open the app.
* As the app opens you will land in a list of categories. Navigate using up and down arrow keys in this list until you find Desktop.
* Now press ctrl+tab to move out of the list to the focusable control that follows after the list.
* You will land on the first item inside another group of controls. The first item you will recognize is Icons on the desktop label. Press the down arrow key until you find Show icons toggle button not pressed. This is a read only control displaying the current status. Now press the right arrow key and you should land on an unlabelled toggle button. Press that button with a space bar. If it's toggled on you can just close the Tweaks window by pressing alt+F4 keys.
If all the windows are closed you will land on the desktop where you can browse through your icons by pressing arrow keys.
If you can go to Settings -> Keyboard you can find a list of possible actions you can assign a keyboard shortcuts to. There is an unbound action called hide all normal windows. I have bound that to super+d. If I hit super+d all the windows are minimized and desktop content view gains the focus.

Well for getting more familiar with Gnome desktop I don't have suggested exercises for you. I think you can try out some very simple apps such as Videos or Gnome logs just to find out if you can make some good use out of them after having some step by steps instructions related to the Text editor, Files and now Tweaks.

Please continue asking if you need more pointers.

Greetings

Peter

I've tried everything, but maybe I don't understand Peter's message very well about navigating GTK apps.

Basically though, I managed to get the app opened but not in the traditional way.

I had to run gnome-tweak-tool from alt+F2.

See, this is what I mean about Gnome. It just doesn't seem at all intuitive. It's great once you learn the basics, but if you don't know these little nuances, then...

OK, bitching session over. Anyway, all that I wanna do is to have it show a list of desktop icons, and I specifically would like it to show external media I've mounted if that is possible. Like a USB flash drive, or if I insert an SD card, or maybe if I insert a CD/DVD with data. I want it mounted to a desktop like in Unity, or Mate.

Really, that's the only thing I wanna honestly tweak.

So, if someone could tell me step by step what to hit once in the app to do that, I'd appreciate it.

Chris.
