The one thing you have to be aware of in mate is that apps run as root
are not accessible. I think this is a mate issue, joanie says she can't
get access to at-spi events with accerciser so there's nothing she can
do. It's best to keep a gnome live stick or dvd around for when you need
to run gparted and other partition rescue tools. The exception are gnome
3 apps like gedit. Those are accessible when run as root. Keep in mind
that this is only gui apps that have this problem. Of course terminal
apps will work just fine, and this is only gtk2 apps that have this
In my experience, what you describe is true if you are as root with su -
but if you just do su, accessibility remains.

I did not get this point clearly.

If you do:
1. Open a terminal
2. su -
3. pluma file

pluma is not accessible.

If uou do su instead of su - step 2, pluma should be accessible. I
assume zou don't use sudo here.

problem. The panel can be a little verbose. If you don't mind hearing
"bottom expanded edge panel. Bottom expanded edge panel panel" every
once in a while when tabbing around, you're fine. Other than that mate
is fully accessible with orca. You do need to enable accessibility in
the assistive technologies dialog box before it will talk, unless debian
does this for you, it probably does. If you want to be able to access
Yes, Debian does.

I did not understand what exactly is Debian doing here?
You mean to say that I have to start accessibility option during setup
and Debian automatically initializes it for all subsequent logins is it?

Yes. Once you use an AT in installer, it enables automatically
accessibility at login, in MATE, Gnome.

I have never done a Debian Installation on my own so wish to know what
should I exactly do to get started?

Press s to start speech, or plug-in a USA braille display, probably will
be detected automatically. The install manual explains things in details.

i am downloading the 4.4 gb dvd iso right now and will write it to a Pen
drive.

Happy hacking.
Krishnakant.
