hi
The one thing you have to be aware of in mate is that apps run as root
are not accessible. I think this is a mate issue, joanie says she can't
get access to at-spi events with accerciser so there's nothing she can
do. It's best to keep a gnome live stick or dvd around for when you need
to run gparted and other partition rescue tools. The exception are gnome
3 apps like gedit. Those are accessible when run as root. Keep in mind
that this is only gui apps that have this problem. Of course terminal
apps will work just fine, and this is only gtk2 apps that have this
problem. The panel can be a little verbose. If you don't mind hearing
"bottom expanded edge panel. Bottom expanded edge panel panel" every
once in a while when tabbing around, you're fine. Other than that mate
is fully accessible with orca. You do need to enable accessibility in
the assistive technologies dialog box before it will talk, unless debian
does this for you, it probably does. If you want to be able to access
the shutdown dialog, you need to add a file called gtk-accessibility.sh
to /etc/profile.d with the following stuff in it. export
GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge. Save and close. Again, I suspect debian has
already done this for you. All of this is supposed to be automated in
mate 1.14, which isn't out yet.
Thanks

All right.
Thanks a million all of you.
I have now decided to download Debian Stretch because it has an
accessible version of Mate as per the version check you all provided.
Any one here has tryed using the Debian's text based installer and
installed Mate with it?
What next to do for configuring it?
How about having it start Orca on login prompt?
And will the notifications for wifi, battery and other stuff be
announced?
Happy hacking.
Krishnakant.

Hello,
Mate is a good alternative to Gnome. The only thing that stops it
from being fully accessible is that it has no magnifier fora low
vision user. Eitehr that or there is a magnifier, but its not as good
as the one built into Gnome.

The latest Orca works with MATE without any problems. I currently
run a fairly recent master branch version from git. The GTK2
libraries that MATE is using still work with the latest Orca. It's
true that some of the older GNOME2 libraries no longer work, but
they are not being used by MATE.
