Perhaps Firefox can be configured to use an external player instead of its
own, which would solve the problem without directing audio output for the
entire system via PulseAudio.

I've performed a quick Web search but can't find any information about an
option for Firefox to use PulseAudio rather than direct ALSA output. Most of
the discussion is about Flash, which is irrelevant here.
