I think the point is there are cases and places when one can promote
free alternatives and see direct results. There are other cases where no
one much will pay attention to you other than the already converted. If
you refuse to interact with people who for any one of many reasons are
currently using the non-free alternative then not only will you miss out
on something in the moment, or they will miss out on something, but you
will miss the chance to explain the advantages you see in FOS down the
line when they are more likely to listen to you.
I am not singling out any person or persons, but also one must
understand that the starving man can't say "I won't eat that bread
because it's not certified organic.", and live to fight for reduction in
the use of harmful chemicals in food production. Most people in the
world do not have a gov. safety net that they can depend on to keep
themselves and their families going till they find work and study
opportunities that meet the standards of the FSF. It is much easier for
someone in the U.S. or some E.U. country whos monthly benefits while
unemployed exceed the yearly earnings for any one of many hundreds of
millions to say that they'd not take some job because they feel strongly
about free software than it is for someone who has no such guaranteed
income. (and I'm not just talking cash payments...)
Should all blind people not have used computers at all before there was
NVDA, Orca or Speakup? We can work for change in many different ways,
and honestly using or not using some free or non-free program or
another is not the only thing one can do, nor even the most effective
thing that one can do to promote more software freedom. Certainly not
using non-free software can be an important part of an overall strategy
for the promotion of FOS, but being understanding of those who can't do
this at times, or can't be a purist will go farther towards bringing
people to use FOS stuph than being judgmental and assuming that people
don't use the free alternative because they are lazy or stupid. Many
people are lazy and stupid, but even some of them can and will learn
over time...lol
One last case and I must get on with things: If I waste an hour a
day using a less efficient program or 3 because they are FOS and the
other option(s that are easier or faster to use are not free software
then all that time can't go in to learning how to program so I can fix
things, or showing people the ready for prime time FOS software that is
out here.
Fortunately I seldom need to use proprietary software, but I"m neither
going to pat myself on the backi for this nor feel guilty for the times
when I need to use Skype, Kurzweil reader, etc.
And one more thing no matter how you feel about what I've said so far:
If you want to educate someone about anything, or try and change their
opinion about something, make as sure as you possibly can to not take
things out of context or say something is or isn't when facts do not
back you up. Don't state opinion as fact, and when your facts are out of
date or you just plain made a mistake be happy to admit it. If people do
not feel you are a reliable information source then even when you are
correct folks won't believe it.
AGain, nothing in this is aimed at any one person. I just wanted to tie
up a few loose ends as it were.

If people weren't interested in making things happen with the free
stuff, we wouldn't have GNU/Linux gui and associated apps. In your
language learning example, I'd exhaust local and free options, first.
Re: my family, we use the phone and email. Had I gotten to them
sooner, they'd be on Trisquel.
Cheers,
