Re: [orca-list] Built in Controls for Espeak Pretty Please with Sugar, cheeries, whatever it takes on top :)

Sorry, resending this to the whole list.

I think there is a slight misunderstanding of the feature we are
requesting. We are not asking for Orca to include its own version of
Espeak, nor are we asking to remove support for speech-dispatcher. We
are simply asking for a new selectable speech system to be added, which
would be able to interface directly with the version of Espeak that is
installed on the system and could take advantage of all its features,
bypassing speech-dispatcher, which in this case, adds a layer of
complexity and reduces Espeak's functionality. Additionally, I feel it
is better to remove layers of complexity wherever possible, especially
if it increases performance and functionality overall. It seems better
for Orca to be able to speak directly to a speech synthesizer if it can,
rather than talking to a separate program that talks to the speech
synthesizer. This is not always the case, but usually, wherever you have
fewer processes interacting, you also get better performance and less
bugs related to unexpected or unintended process interactions. One bug I
can see immediately being fixed by this feature, aside from the obvious
access to voice variants and other Espeak controls, is the problem that
we have where pressing a punctuation symbol when key echo is on is
pronounced differently from backspacing over the same symbol. Espeak is
guaranteed to always pronounce the same symbol the same way under most
all circumstances, so this bug would immediately cease to exist for
Espeak users. I hope this clears up some of the confusion surrounding
this subject.
