You can install FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD without any assistance, I run all 3.
I use qemu and the installs talk under speakup.

My solution to the release problem is my machine has a large hard drive and
I multiboot so that I have a stable system, and multiple other systems to
test with.
I also have several virtual machines for freebsd, netbsd, etc.

Hope this offers some other options.
