Hello,
I think in Simon's case most likelly orca is crashing as speech
dispatcher is working each time spd-say is called.
Can you try redirecting orca --debug into a file and then read it while
running gnome?
See here for more details how to debug orca.
You might be able to prepare it all while running gnome using the
customizations.py method this way you would just need to launch it while
running xfce and then go back to gnome to read the output.
