If you have only one audio output device you can reconfigure pulse to
use alsa's dmix plugin.
In that case you can use alsa and pulse mixed.

To do this copy default.pa from /etc/pulse to ~/.pulse
and add device=dmix
to alsa module which should be loaded manualy.
load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix
Don't forget to comment line
load-module module-detect

I am using that setup since pulseaudio was integrated in ubuntu and
other distros.
