It's a hard wire connect from the dos serial port to the linux serial
port with no keyboard attached to the linux box. I have kept a machine
with real dos on it separate from all the windows garbage up and running
for certain jobs like this and it can still dial out on a modem using
commo when needed too. So for the connect no ip address negotiation
happens or is needed. You just get your serial parameters to match on
both ends and you got yourself a console terminal.

How would you get the ip address to log onto it to drive it from your dos
box? Btw, do you really mean a Windows machine when you say that? I didn't
know people could get their hands on pure Dos anymore.
Also, to address the question of does Gnome need Pulse or not to work, the
answer is emphatically no, it does not. I have a system running Gnome 3.4.2
and it doesn't have Pulse on it. It works fine with just pure alsa. Having
said that, I don't have a problem with how Pulse interacts with
speech-dispatcher and, hence, Orca in Gnome. If it didn't cut out the sound
and allowed console speech to work out of the box, I wouldn't ever go to all
the trouble of weeding it out of my installation procedure.

First of all, I routinely neglect to install gnome on systems, so there will
be no sacrifice when that's done. Rarely when I do install gnome pulse
according to other posts appears to work better with gnome than the console
I can allow pulse to be installed. The fact that pulse won't now work well
in both kinds of interface can be overcome by using a dos box to log into a
gnome system and dropping to console during login and using the speech
software on the dos box to navigate and manage the gnome system from console
for what is best done on that level.

But doesn't gnome make you install pulse? At least gnome 3.8 will do
that.

That makes sense, maybe an additional safeguard would be to forbid
pulse formally inside of aptitude effectively blacklisting the whole
system.

Could not agree more! You use aptitude to do it. You install
just the core utilities which is like number 10 in the software
menu during Debian installation. You then launch aptitude once
you've rebooted and disable automatic installation of suggested
packages. The next thing I do after that is to quit aptitude and
install emacspeak from source. This way, I can go into shell mode, su
to root and run aptitude install <desired package> .
I always tell it no the first time around and then cut and yank
the stuff I want into a separate install line from the suggested
package list it tells me it won't be installing. This lets me
chery pick without having to type every single solitary package I
want. If this doesn't make sense to you, let me know and I'll try to
type up something more coherent.

Hi Jude,
If you want a Debian system without pulse its better off to do a
clean install and install the packages manually so you don't have
to rip pulse out and a bunch of other stuff, and reconfigure
everything.
Cheers!

Hi, I'd like to trash pulseaudio for more reasons than that.
What can I use on debian to clear that off a system? pulseaudio
throws all kinds of errors on boot up.
