First of all, I routinely neglect to install gnome on systems, so there 
will be no sacrifice when that's done.  Rarely when I do install gnome 
pulse according to other posts appears to work better with gnome than 
the console I can allow pulse to be installed.  The fact that pulse 
won't now work well in both kinds of interface can be overcome by using 
a dos box to log into a gnome system and dropping to console during 
login and using the speech software on the dos box to navigate and 
manage the gnome system from console for what is best done on that 
level.
