I'll look for that option when I get back on my linux box. In the meantime, I found some mails from last
year and I will need to re-install gnome-shell. I think at the time I was battling a missing desktop too so
it had been suggested to have gnome-shell and gnome-tweak-tool installed to make a config change for the
desktop and then remove those two packages to keep fallback mode on by default since gnome-shell would be
unavailable. So I probably just need to install gnome-shell and see what happens now.
Thanks for the quick reply.

When gnome shell came out last year and was so inaccessible I
remember getting some advice on how to change the environment so it

gnome 3.4.1 bit run with gnome shell now that things have apparently
improved. Problem is, I don't remember what I changed so I can undo
that change. Does anyone remember how to force fall back mode? I can
then go and take that option out.
Perhaps 'gnome-control-center info' dialog? There's a 'Forced Fallback
Mode' switch under 'Graphics'.
HTH. Take care.
