Concerning different views in Nautilus, I found the icon view to be a lot faster than list view but 
personally, I don't like icon view much.  Too bad they don't have a column view like in the Apple OS/X 
finder:).

Actually, I've been asking about an alternative file manager to replace nautilus for years but never got a 
satisfactory answer.  This problem is not unique to Ubuntu either.
