Hy,
If the gnome-session-fallback package are installed, magical possible
doing desktop icons, this is working Precise too.
You need launching following command in terminal, or associate a custom
binding this command in keyboard preference tool:
gnome-desktop-item-edit --create-new Desktop
If your locale named different the Desktop folder in your home
directory, you need using the correct name.
This is working too in Unity environment, for example now I created
testing purpose a desktop icon my Documents folder.
