Hi all.
I took the following steps to install speakup in my ubuntu 12.04.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install speakup espeakup

Probably you'll get an error but you can ignore it.

Now to activate:

sudo gedit /etc/modules

Include in the end of the file the folloing line:
speakup_soft start=1

Reboot ...
Now you can use ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to console mode and ctrl+alt+f7 to 
switch to the graphical mode.

One problem that I found is that I can not use the same login  in the 
graphical mode  and and in the console mode. Speakup didn't speak in 
this situation. I think that it is related to pulse audio.
What I do is login as root in the console and use my login in the 
graphical mode.
