Yes true, you're right; emacs is great. For some large volume
renaming of files, the command line really doesn't do it for
me. however. It is so handy to be able to press f2 or something
similar and then just edit around in the file name that is presented
in an edit box. Dired does offer this. I've used mc in the past but
is sometimes tricky with speakup though.
I think my bigger concern is that some of the accesses or
functionality gained with gnome and Orca is being lost by the gnome 3
changes. Not sure if Orca is it fault here or not; it does not appear
to be the case.

Alternatively, there is mc, which I haven't tried.
I generally use the shell for this with find, rm, mv, cp, ln, ls, grep etc.
Maybe it's my file organization habits, but there are very few situations in
which I want a file browser.
