I infact feel swt is the best way to go.
It has the native look and feel of the desktop and is accessible.
Look at eclipse for example.
Happy hacking.

SWT is cross-platform and can be accessed by screenreaders on Linux,

I do not really recommend programming with swt, swing is much better.
I was myself testing this atk wrapper, and although it has some
problems, they are somewhat minor.

Hi Andy,
Yes. Java applications are reasonably accessible on Linux with Orca.
You need to get and compile the java-atk-wrapper package from
ftp.gnome.org. That will provide you access to Java applications using
swing. If you use Eclipse with the swt graphics toolkit you can
actually build accessible apps in Java without having the
java-atk-wrapper since swt is a wrapper for the native toolkits like
GTK+.
Cheers!

According to some classes I am going to take in my Associates program next
year, Java programming in both a Windows, and Linux/Unix environment is
required. Is there any resources on developing accessible Java

in *nix that accessible technology, including screen readers will be able
to
use?
