It sounds like you're having all kinds of problems over there and so
little to go on. I mean can you get into gnome with the startx
command? If so, can you choose speech dispatcher while using Orca?
Also from gdm? Is it all the time that speech dispatcher never shows
up in the list of speech systems or just when using gdm and even more
specifically, If/when using gdm, is this situation while in gdm or
after you login with your normal user account?
Once speech dispatcher is properly installed and running, Orca should
show it in the list of speech systems. Frankly for me, I think it
always did as long as speech dispatcher was eithe running as a system
service or if successfully autospawned. I did have some issues while
working in gdm but that's why we need to pin your issues down better
before I can give you a better answer.

Hi again Steve,
OK, so I have added gdm and my user to speechd, and I can now use spd-say but I cannot select
speech-dispatcher with Orca.
What is the problem?

Hi,
Sorry for being off topic, but I am not able to get it working.
I have now started speechd in /etc.rc.conf and I can run spd-say as root
but not as a normal user. It cannot connect to speech dispatcher.
What is wrong here?
Add gdm and any other normal users who will be using speech-dispatcher
to the speechd group. Either edit /etc/group and stick the users on
the end of the line for speechd or do like the following:
groupmems -a <user-name> -g speechd
do this for each user you want added to speechd. The user speechd
should already be added to the audio group; the setup script does
that. I don't think the users need to be explicitly added to the
audio group unless you want to play other audio files. But that would
be for another topic entirely.
Sorry for the trouble you're running into here. I need to write up a
post doc list of steps that one would have to do to get this all
working. Thanks for being the ginnipig for me <smile>.
