The bottom line here though, if you are running gdm from /etc/rc.conf
you shouldn't need startx and you should be able to get into the
currently active X session by pressing alt+F7 on most systems.  If X
is not starting with gdm either, then remove gdm from the daemons list
in /etc/rc.conf and then type startx from the text console of your
choice. Yes, I've always seen those warning messages in that terminal
from which X was tarted.  Haven't a clue as to their meaning and
origin.  I don't know anything about the xdg base directory either.
