everything through jack? I believe this should work, although I have no
specific experience with either jack or pulse myself, but if you aren't
running pulse jack should be able to get exclusive access to the sound
card, although you may have to do some further fiddling to get speech to
work.

Exactly, because JACK does not seem to be a compatible device for speech
dispatcher. The user is left with pulse, ALSA, OSS and NAS. That's it.
Pulse seems not to be acceptable anywhere, and nobody knows the reason
why Ubuntu has decided to put it as a default sound server.
