2010/6/7 Steve Holmes <steve holmes88 gmail com>:
One overall question I have here after this very long thread. Whether
we step through gconf first and then onto gsettings or go strait
there, will there be an easy to migrate current user settings up to
the new format? Especially if we have to go through two conversions, I
would hate to have to go through and manually reconfigure Orca and my
custom settings twice.
Actually, it won't. This is a concern that was discussed time ago at
GNOME devel list and the migration of the old user settings is taking
account. There are already "conversors" so the schemas can be migrated
and kind of importer/exporter for the settings already configured.
My only complaint about these API type settings is I find them harder
to backup and restore. This is my own personal perception though.
I undertand and believe me, this is very importan issue for us
(Guadalinfo team), because we have over thousand PC with Linux and
Orca and much more users. I can assure you that we don't want to have
problems with so huge migration....
We've been already thinking about how to import the old config and
migrate into the new one (GConf). It won't be too much complicated.
And for the migration from GConf to GSettings there will be tools
already.
In case you use another backend shouldn't be hard to migrate because
the system is meant to load from one backend and be able to store in
another, so the migration is just a matter of select the target
backend.
I hope this will fit with your expectations.
Cheers
