Re: [orca-list] orca and lxde

Hello,
I have to say that I can't give you a certain answer here as I only use gnome, but here are some things I have found by looking around.

It seems like the start up stuff for LXDE happens in the file /etc/lxsession/LXDE/autostart and also in that /etc/lxsession/LXDE directory there is some other files. Also I think LXDE has config files in /etc/lxde. I found a message on a debian mailing list from you about this, probably one of the places I would suggest asking. Another place might be to look at the LXDE homepage http://lxde.sf.net, I think there is a forum there. Also looking on www.knoppix.net there seems to be a knoppix forum, I was unable to find anything on the knoppix-adriane CD indicating what they start, may be its part of that menu system in the text console before you start an X session which does the stuff for setting environment variables, etc.

I couldn't find an obvious knoppix mailing list to write too. I'm now at
the point where if I run orca from alt+f2, it works correctly, and if I
run apps from this dialog they work correctly. I do have to run orca
twice though for some reason for it to work... What does gnome start
exactly? Maybe I need to be starting at-spi somehow?

Thanks,
Dan

I've now been able to set GTK_MODULES. However, it appears that orca and
applications to be voiced will only speak if launched from a
terminal. If orca is launched from the command dialog (alt+f2), the
value of GTK_MODULES appears to be ignored. Do you have any suggestions
of what could be going wrong? The only thing I can think of is that I'm
not exporting the variable properly... I hear nopix have it running, so
I might shoot them an email.

Thanks very much!

Good to hear that works.

Just had a quick look at something, possibly a way you can set that
variable. On my system there is a ~/.xinitrc file (there is also a
~/.xsession file but that simply sources the ~/.xinitrc file, just
mentioning it in case you don't have the ~/.xinitrc) and in there I
find a line right at the end which starts my X window manager (in my
case gnome-session). For me this line is:
exec gnome-session
I tried putting the export command just before this to set a
environment variable and then I saved the file and logged out and
back in and sure enough the variable is automatically set for me. As
I believe these are X window files and not gnome specific it should
also work for LXDE if you have the files (I am using a GRML system
so I don't know whether these files are relevant for your distro).

Thanks, your a champ, that did the trick -- if I run it from a lxterm, and
then invoke orca, I can read the orca window. Once orca is running I can
start a new lxterm, and export again invoking another gtk app
eg. firefox. This works great, however, now I just need to go and find
out what file I should place this in as so it will automatically set the
variables upon start of lxde, and therefore theoretically I should have
access to the desktop, and all apps I invoke.

Thanks for all your help! After some googling, it seems others have got
it working so I'll keep persisting.:)

Cheers,
Dan
