I'm using arch here and it works quite well. I haven't had any trouble
hacking things up to make it work for me but if you want I'll take a
look at the hal stuff and see how it is screwing with things since I
need to look at it to get it to stop automounting stuff. I really hate
hal and similar autodetection stuff and I wish there was an option to
disable it without horribly breaking the desktop. I don't know where
the hal rule files are documented either else I'd fix them. If anybody
can point us at some docs I'm sure we could make this work.
