Re: [orca-list] Thunderbird is really Groovin'!

Hello,
I have to be honest, I haven't read those bug reports, but here are some observations/comments.

Firstly knowing exact number of items in such a large list isn't something I really need to know, if it was then a key press to get that information would be sufficient.

Now for an observation, it has been said in this thread that a large list seems to cause the sluggishness, I have just tried in thunderbird and it actually seems to be when near the end of a long list. If I am at the beginning of my message list (which is far too big, I really should clean it out) then orca is very snappy, but go to the end and it goes really slow, go to the middle and it is certainly faster than at the end but certainly slower than at the beginning. Does this observation help?

Hi Joanie

If looking at the bugs below, and if I understood it correctly the problem
comes from the need to announce the number of items, perhaps a way around
is (until this bug is fixed if it does) is to scan the rows only up to a
certain limit (say 100) and announce to the user 'Over 100 items' or an
abbreviated version something like '100 plus'; I suspect that in most
situations the actual number of items in a very long list is not that
important; a snappy performance is perhaps more desirable.
For those who need to know the exact number of items in a huge tree, perhaps
a general info shortcut (if not included already) could do the job.

Regards
Isaac

I'm afraid we're already aware of this issue. Sluggishness in tables should
be largely (if not entirely) resolved if we had a reciprocal relationship
for NODE_CHILD_OF. See the following bugs:
