Hi All:
This is also not an Orca-specific problem. The problem exists when
accessibility is enabled, regardless of whether assistive technologies
are running or not.
As I mentioned in
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/orca-list/2009-August/msg00124.html, my
guess is that the root cause of the problem might be some odd main loop
reentrancy issue inside emacs-gtk itself. On my OpenSolaris box, the
hang really only exists when I run accerciser and is more of an
unacceptable long-ish painful delay when running Orca.
While this is not an Orca-specific problem per se, however, I think
it's fair to at least come up with a workaround here to get people who
use emacs and Orca off the ground.

I tested using emacs22 and still get the same result, orca and gnome
hanging.
This may suggest that the issue whatever it is is not so much a change
between the versions of emacs but a change in some other part of the
system
perhaps metacity.
Is there anyone running say Intrepid or perhaps Hardy who can test
Thomas's
script against emacs23? If we can prove that this approach of unseting
GTK_MODULES works with emacs23 with an earlier version of gnome then
we can
definitively say that the fact that it no longer works is not emacs
fault.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Will, do you want this discussion taken elsewhere?

Bart

Tomas,
This unfortunantly doesn't work for me. I guess this is similar to
what I
was doing by starting emacs from the console. Apparently whatever
made this
work in emacs22 doesn't work in emacs23.
I'll try loading up emacs22 to confirm this.
At least if we can nail it down to a behavior change between emacs22
and 23
we may be able to give the developers a pointer.
If this is effecting emacs-gtk when orca isn't running I must ask the
question does this effect everyone trying to run emacs under gnome,
which I
struggle to believe is true, or is this somehow an interaction with
accessibility support?
Is there anyone out there that can try this with and without
accessibility
support in gnome enabled. If it only happens when support is on then
that
is another pointer we have to the issue.
Regards
Bart

I've briefly chased through the bug and I'm not sure if it is metacity
or emacs. My suspicion is that it is an emacs main loop problem as
mentioned in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=392889#c18.
I didn't read the bug at all, so I don't know if it is related, but I
have the following script to be able to run GTK Emacs in Gnome:
#!/bin/bash
unset GTK_MODULES
/usr/bin/emacs22-gtk $*
Without this hack, the desktop freezes randomly when I run GTK Emacs
(with or even without orca running).
Hope it helps, Tomas
