Ls -1 does fine for some situations but there's nothing like having a
pick list you can navigate through to act on selected files.  I use
tab completion for those long file names but try renaming a bunch of
selected files via commands in the shell some time.  A file browser
like mc, Nautilus, dired, etc. make this much easier.  I've been
getting some files via podcast recently with garbage after the file
extension and the easiest way to clean thise up is to use Nautilus and
when highlighted, I can merely hit f2 to open the rename dialog and
edit the file name the way I see fit.  That would be much harder with
the mv command.  So file browser/managers do have their rightful
place.

Perhaps ls -1 is what you are after or have a look at man ls... Moving
random files from a large list... I'm not sure about that one...
